Close Encounters of the Third Kind follows Roy Neary, an ordinary electric lineman whose life is upended after a startling UFO sighting. Plagued by recurring visions of a strange, mound-like formation and a haunting five-note motif, Roy becomes obsessed with discovering what it means, even as his marriage and daily life unravel. At the same time, single mother Jillian Guiler—another witness whose young son is touched by the phenomenon—joins the search for answers. An international team of scientists led by Claude Lacombe investigates growing physical evidence of extraterrestrial activity and even develops a musical code to try to communicate. As authorities attempt to control the situation, these separate threads draw together at a remote landmark where humans and visitors finally prepare to make contact.
