The school presents itself as a paradise of freedom and opportunity, but its strict merit-based system rewards only the highest-ranked students while marginalizing the rest. After performing poorly on the entrance exam, quiet student Kiyotaka Ayanokouji is placed in Class D—the catch-all for those deemed “inferior"—and finds himself looked down upon by his peers. His outlook begins to shift when he becomes involved with two classmates, Suzune Horikita and Kikyo Kushida, setting off a series of events that challenge the school’s hierarchy.
