Armand, who runs a flamboyant drag nightclub called The Birdcage in South Beach, and his longtime partner Albert — the club’s star performer — must hide their true lives when Armand’s son Val announces he’s engaged to Barbara, the daughter of an ultra-conservative senator. To appease the future in-laws and win their approval, the couple stage an elaborate ruse to appear like a conventional, straight family. Predictable misunderstandings, identity swaps and comic chaos ensue as they scramble to keep up the pretense and protect Val’s relationship.
