Set in 1990s Miami and inspired by true events, Pain & Gain follows ambitious gym trainer Daniel Lugo as he grows frustrated with the limits of his paycheck and decides to seize the American dream by any means. He ropes in two fellow bodybuilders—Adrien, a driven but troubled lifter, and Paul, an ex-con with strong convictions—and together they hatch a plan to kidnap and extort a wealthy gym client, Victor Kershaw. What begins as a blunt, cash-driven scheme to force Kershaw to sign over his assets quickly unravels: the trio’s brutality and bad judgment lead to torture, lavish spending, and a cascade of increasingly reckless crimes. Equal parts dark comedy and crime drama, the film tracks how greed, steroids-fueled bravado and ineptitude turn a get-rich plot into a chaotic, tragic mess.
