Ágora (2009) Netflix

Set in Alexandria in the late 4th century (around 391 AD), Agora centers on Hypatia, a brilliant philosopher, mathematician and astronomer who teaches at the city’s famed center of learning. Her young slave Davus harbors a secret love for her but is tempted by the newly ascendant Christian movement as a means to social advancement and freedom. As church leaders gain political clout and religious zeal erupts into street violence, the institutions that protect knowledge — and the fragile civic order of the city — begin to crumble. The film follows the collision of ideas and loyalties as reason, faith and power vie for Alexandria’s future.
