Chungking Express (1994) Netflix Spain

Chungking Express

Chungking Express follows two separate, mood-driven vignettes about loneliness and longing in 1990s Hong Kong. Both stories center on heartbroken policemen who, while trying to move on from failed relationships, find unexpected connections in the city’s crowded, neon-lit streets and the small late-night food stall they both frequent.

In the first tale, a young plainclothes officer known only as 223 copes with a recent breakup by buying a can of pineapple with the same expiry date every day, hoping time will either restore his romance or force him to let go. His routine is upended when he crosses paths with a glamorous, enigmatic woman in a blonde wig and trench coat who is tangled up with smugglers — a brief, charged encounter that shifts his course.

The second story follows cop 663, who is still reeling from another failed relationship. He begins to notice Faye, a quirky, free-spirited counter worker at the midnight eatery he habitually visits. Her small, persistent intrusions into his life — from blasting familiar songs to slipping into his apartment when he’s not there — gradually open a tender, quiet possibility of new affection.

Told in Wong Kar-wai’s signature impressionistic style, the film is less about plot than atmosphere: intimate, color-drenched moments that capture the ache of urban solitude and the strange ways people brush up against one another.
