Osamu and Nobuyo live in a cramped Tokyo home with Nobuyo’s sister Aki, their adolescent son Shota, and elderly grandmother Hatsue. To stretch meager incomes and a small pension, Osamu and Shota routinely shoplift everyday necessities, while the household skirts social norms with a pragmatic, if questionable, moral code.
