Twelve-year-old Akira and his three younger siblings are left to fend for themselves in a cramped Tokyo apartment when their mother abruptly walks out of their lives. Having never been registered for school and with some of the children kept hidden from their landlord, the siblings cobble together a fragile routine on the little money she leaves behind. As bills pile up and resources dwindle, Akira becomes resourceful and determined, trying to keep their household running without utilities or adult supervision. Their isolated world is held together by sibling loyalty, games and a child's hopeful waiting for their mother to return. But when encounters with the outside world force them to confront authorities and neighbors, the precarious balance they've built begins to unravel, exposing both the cruelty of their situation and the resilience and tenderness that bind them.
