Set in 2034, two years after Major Motoko Kusanagi unexpectedly left Section 9, Solid State Society follows the newly expanded task force as it faces a wave of baffling incidents across the city. Togusa has taken over command of Section 9 and, together with the enlarged team, must investigate a string of complex cases that increasingly point to an elusive cybercriminal known only as the "Puppeteer." With Kusanagi absent—having resigned in the wake of a series of refugee suicides—the team must unravel a sprawling conspiracy of digital manipulation and human desperation without their former leader.
