Set in a future where humanity has been driven to live underground, Gurren Lagann follows timid young digger Simon and his loud, fearless friend Kamina, who refuses to accept life beneath the earth and dreams of reaching the surface. When Simon uncovers a strange, powerful mecha and the two join forces with the sharpshooter Yoko, they break through to the surface only to find a world dominated by giant, hostile machines and a tyrannical ruler determined to keep people underground. Rallying allies and piloting ever-larger robots, the group sparks a rebellion that grows from a small fight for survival into an epic campaign to free humanity and reclaim the surface. At its heart the series is about friendship, courage, and the explosive escalation of hope against oppression.
