The Passion of the Christ (2004) Netflix UK

The Passion of the Christ dramatizes the final hours in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. Beginning after the Last Supper in the Garden of Gethsemane, the film follows Jesus as he prays, resists spiritual temptation and is betrayed by Judas Iscariot. Arrested, he is brought before the Jewish authorities, accused of blasphemy, and then handed over to the Roman governor. Pontius Pilate and King Herod each confront the political and religious pressure surrounding Jesus, and the crowd is given a choice between freeing Jesus or the criminal Barabbas—Barabbas is released and Jesus is condemned. He endures a brutal scourging, mockery by soldiers, and is forced to carry his cross through the streets of Jerusalem to Golgotha. There he is nailed to the cross and suffers until his death, with his mother and a few followers at his side. The film presents these events in a stark, visceral manner (largely in ancient Aramaic, Latin and Hebrew), highlighting betrayal, sacrifice and the physical and spiritual torment of those last hours.
