The Avalon is a state-of-the-art starship on a century-plus voyage to the distant colony Homestead II, carrying thousands of passengers in hibernation. When a malfunction in the cryogenic system wakes one passenger, mechanic Jim Preston, he finds himself utterly alone and unable to return to sleep.
