The Freeling family — father Steve, mother Diane and their children Dana, Robbie and little Carol Anne — move into a new suburban home in the Cuesta Verde development. At first the house offers odd, harmless disturbances: objects shift, cupboards open, and things that should be mundane take on a strange life of their own.
When the activity turns violent — trees and toys attack, and Carol Anne disappears into what seems to be another realm, communicating only through the static on the television — the Freelings call in paranormal experts led by Dr. Lesh and a psychic named Tangina. What began as eerie mischief becomes a desperate fight to reclaim their daughter and confront the powerful, malevolent forces haunting their home.
