Decades after a massive mothership appeared over Johannesburg, a stranded alien population—derided as "prawns"—is confined to a squalid, fenced-off ghetto called District 9. The extraterrestrials, who came to Earth seeking refuge from a dying homeworld, are managed and exploited by humans while a private corporation, Multi-National United (MNU), tries to extract profit and unlock their advanced weaponry—technology that only responds to alien DNA. When MNU field operative Wikus van der Merwe is exposed to alien biotechnology and begins to mutate, he becomes both the priceless key to that technology and the target of a global hunt. Forced to take refuge among the very creatures he helped oppress, Wikus’s transformation drives a tense, morally charged story about segregation, exploitation and the blurred line between victim and perpetrator.
