The town’s moral guardian, Mayor Comte de Reynaud, views the shop as a threat and pushes back, while the arrival of a group of river travelers led by Roux intensifies local divisions. As Vianne reaches out to lonely, trapped, or grieving neighbors — helping an abused woman, brightening an aging free spirit, and stirring unexpected romances — the village slowly confronts its prejudices.
