Based on a true story, Lion follows Saroo, a five-year-old boy from a poor rural family in India who becomes separated from his brother and accidentally boards a train that carries him far from home to the streets of Calcutta. Alone and unable to identify where he’s from, he eventually enters an orphanage and is adopted by an Australian couple, growing up in Tasmania. Decades later, haunted by memories of his first family, Saroo quietly embarks on a determined search using online mapping tools to try to pinpoint his hometown and reunite with the relatives he lost. The film traces his emotional journey between two very different worlds as he seeks answers and belonging.
