Five years have passed since Hippo began training his dragon, after breaking the Viking tradition of hunting them. Astrid and the rest of the gang have managed to spread a new sport on the island: dragon races. As they race, they cross the skies into inhospitable territories, where no one has been before. During a trip they discover an ice-covered cave that turns out to be the refuge of hundreds of wild dragons, which a mysterious guardian takes care of. Hippo and his people join the guardian to protect the dragons from evil forces that want to destroy them.
