Being John Malkovich (1999) Netflix

Being John Malkovich

Craig Schwartz, a struggling New York puppeteer, takes a dead-end filing job on the odd 7½ floor of an office building and stumbles on a small hidden door that leads into the mind of actor John Malkovich. Anyone who enters the tunnel experiences life through Malkovich’s senses for about fifteen minutes before being expelled onto the side of the New Jersey Turnpike. Craig tells his wife Lotte and his attractive co-worker Maxine about the portal, and Maxine quickly sees a way to turn the phenomenon into profit by selling guided trips into Malkovich’s head.

What begins as a bizarre novelty soon spirals into jealousy, desire and identity theft: Lotte and Maxine develop an intimate relationship that can only be physically consummated when Lotte is inhabiting Malkovich, Craig grows obsessed with using the portal to possess the life he wants, and Malkovich himself becomes aware of intruders in his consciousness. The scheme attracts darker forces tied to LesterCorp. and a secret tradition of body “channellers," and it culminates in betrayals and role reversals that upend who controls whom. The film blends surreal humor and disturbing imagination to explore longing, power and the ethics of inhabiting another person.
