Elite Squad (2007) Netflix
Set in 1997 Rio de Janeiro, Elite Squad follows Captain Nascimento, commander of BOPE (the police special operations battalion), as he struggles to secure the favelas ahead of the Pope’s visit while also trying to find a worthy successor so he can step away for his growing family. With a chronically underfunded and often corrupt police force, BOPE operates with ruthless tactics against heavily armed drug gangs that treat the slums as battle zones. Two childhood friends, the impulsive Neto and the idealistic Matías, join the military police expecting to fight crime by the book, only to be forced through BOPE’s brutal training and confronted with the moral compromises of policing in Rio. Their lives and choices collide with Nascimento’s mission, raising harsh questions about loyalty, violence and what it takes to survive in a city at war with itself.
