My Fair Lady (1964) Netflix
Set in early 20th-century London, this witty musical follows fastidious linguist Professor Henry Higgins, who wagers with fellow scholar Colonel Pickering that he can teach cockney flower seller Eliza Doolittle to speak and behave like a lady of high society. Through rigorous speech lessons Eliza learns refined manners and even attracts the attention of young aristocrat Freddy Eynsford-Hill, but when Higgins takes the credit and fails to recognize her effort, she walks away to claim her own identity. Higgins soon realizes he has become unexpectedly dependent on her presence and must confront the feelings his experiment has stirred.
Adapted from George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion and the Broadway musical, the film mixes comedy, romance and social satire as it explores class, transformation and personal independence.
