Teyve, the milkman of a Ukrainian village, lives happily with his wife and his five daughters, all single. One afternoon, while doing the casting, he meets Perchick, a poor student of Kiev with revolutionary ideals. At the same time, Lazar Wolf, a rough butcher who has remained widowed, asks Teyve for the hand of his eldest daughter.
