City of God (2002) Netflix

City of God

Set in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro from the 1960s into the 1980s, City of God follows the lives of children who come of age amid petty crime, escalating drug trafficking and brutal gang warfare. The film is narrated by Buscapé (known as Rocket), a timid, observant boy who dreams of becoming a photographer and hopes his camera will offer a way out. Around him, friends and rivals take darker paths — most notably the merciless Li’l Zé (formerly Dadinho) — as power struggles and violence reshape the neighborhood. Told through Buscapé’s eyes, the story weaves together intersecting lives and shows how ambition, fear and survival drive people to choices that alter everything. Based on a semi-autobiographical novel, the movie delivers a raw, unflinching portrait of life in a community consumed by crime.
