Gran Torino follows Walt Kowalski, a recently widowed Korean War veteran and retired auto worker who lives alone in a changing Detroit neighborhood. Hardened, bitter, and out of step with his grown children, Walt clings to his prized 1972 Gran Torino and his old prejudices—until a frightened Hmong teenager named Thao is pressured by a local gang to steal the car. When Walt foils the attempt, he is reluctantly drawn into Thao’s life and, over time, into the wider Hmong family next door. What begins as irritation turns into a wary mentorship and genuine concern as Walt teaches Thao life skills, helps him find work, and stands up to the gang threatening the family. The film is a portrait of aging, confrontation with past and prejudice, and an unlikely path to redemption sparked by friendship and sacrifice.
