Cairo, 1917. During the Great War (1914-1918), T.E. Lawrence (Peter O'Toole), a troubled and enigmatic British civil servant, is sent into the desert to take part in a campaign supporting the Arabs against Turkey. He and his friend Sherif Ali (Omar Sharif) will put their souls into this mission. The natives adore Lawrence because he has shown himself to be a lover of the desert and the Arab people. Instead, his British superiors believe that he has gone mad.
