Shy high-schooler Ed Wallis chooses his gruff next-door neighbor, Ashby, as the subject of a school assignment and slowly forges an unlikely friendship with him. Ashby is a retired CIA contract killer now facing terminal illness, determined to put his life in order and reckon with a troubled past — a quest for redemption that may include confronting old bosses who wronged him. Equal parts coming-of-age and dark comedy-drama, the film traces how the two men influence each other as Ed searches for who he wants to be and Ashby confronts mortality and conscience.
