Teyve, the milkman of a Ukrainian village, lives happily with his wife and his five daughters, all single. One afternoon, while doing the casting, he meets Perchick, a poor student of Kiev with revolutionary ideals. The two sympathize, and Teyve offers him home and food in exchange for teaching one of his daughters. At the same time, Lazar Wolf, a rough butcher who has remained widowed, asks Teyve for the hand of his eldest daughter.
