The Lover (1992) Netflix

The Lover

Set in 1929 French Indochina, The Lover follows a young French girl who, while returning to her boarding school in Saigon, attracts the attention of a wealthy, Western-educated Chinese businessman. What begins as a chance encounter on public transport becomes a secret, passionate affair that crosses strict lines of age, race and class. Their relationship exposes the pressures of colonial society, family disapproval and the limits placed on any future they might imagine. Told through the lens of memory and based on Marguerite Duras’s semi‑autobiographical novel, the film is an intimate, often controversial portrait of desire and its consequences.
