Willard Stiles is a lonely, awkward man trapped by a controlling past and a fraught life: he cares for his emotionally abusive mother in their fading mansion and endures steady humiliation at the factory where his late father's business ties keep him employed. He finds an unlikely refuge in the vast colony of rats in his basement, forming a strange, almost telepathic bond with certain leaders—companions that finally give him loyalty and purpose. As pressures at work and at home mount and a personal tragedy pushes him to the edge, Willard channels his anger through his rodents, directing them to settle scores with those who have tormented him. A sympathetic office temp, Cathryn, briefly offers compassion, but the swelling legion of rats soon drives events toward a violent, terrifying turning point.
