Black (2005) Netflix South Africa

Black

Michelle McNally is left deaf, blind and mute after an early childhood illness and grows up isolated, frightened and prone to violent outbursts while her parents struggle to cope. Their lives change when Debraj Sahai, an eccentric, down-on-his-luck teacher for the deaf-blind, takes on the seemingly impossible task of teaching her to communicate. Through his unconventional methods and relentless patience, Michelle learns language, gains confidence and pursues an education, forging a powerful bond with her mentor. Years later that bond is tested as time and illness alter their roles, but Michelle’s hard-won independence and spirit remain a moving testament to perseverance and the transformative power of teaching.
