After having trained and represented the best pugs, Frankie Dunn (Eastwood) runs a gymnasium with the help of Scrap (Freeman), a former boxer who is also his only friend. Frankie is a lone man and an admirer who has been taking refuge in religion for years looking for a redemption that does not come. One day, Maggie Fitzgerald (Swank) enters his gym, a volunteer girl who wants to box and who is willing to fight hard to get it. Frankie rejects her on the grounds that he does not train girls and that he is too old. But Maggie does not give up and crush every day in the gym, with the only support of Scrap.
