The Last Days (1999) Netflix

The Last Days is an Oscar-winning documentary that chronicles the Holocaust experiences of five Hungarian-born Jews who later became U.S. citizens. Through first-person testimonies, archival footage and on-location visits to their childhood towns more than half a century later, the film traces their lives from peaceful youth before March 1944, through deportation and imprisonment in Auschwitz and other camps, to narrow escapes, liberation by American troops and the long effort to rebuild their lives.
Interwoven with the survivors’ memories are perspectives from historians, American liberators and people who worked in the camps—a former Sonderkommando and a doctor involved in prisoner experiments—adding historical context and painful detail. Small, vivid moments—a child hiding family jewels, a prisoner clinging to a single garment, the simple relief of fruit offered by liberators—give the narrative its emotional power. Executive produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by James Moll, the film honors both the victims’ suffering and their resilience.
