Amistad (1997) Netflix
In 1839, a group of Africans being transported aboard the Spanish ship La Amistad revolts, led by Cinqué, a former tribal leader. After seizing the vessel, they are eventually intercepted near the United States and imprisoned as alleged runaway slaves, unable to speak the language or explain their plight.
Their fate becomes the focus of a heated legal and political battle: abolitionists and allies — including freedman Theodore Joadson and young lawyer Roger Baldwin — take up their cause, arguing the captives were illegally enslaved and should be recognized as free. The dispute climbs to the U.S. Supreme Court, where former president John Quincy Adams mounts a powerful defense on their behalf. Based on true events, the film blends a gripping mutiny with courtroom drama and the larger moral and diplomatic conflicts of the era.
