Maggie (Melissa McCarthy) is an estranged mother who moves to Brooklyn with her 12-year-old son, Oliver (Jaeden Lieberher). Having to work long hours, she has no choice but to leave Oliver in the care of her new neighbor, Vincent (Bill Murray), a grumpy retiree who loves drinking and gambling. Soon, a peculiar friendship blossoms between them. Alongside a pregnant stripper named Daka (Naomi Watts), Vincent takes the boy through all the stops that make up his daily routine: horse racing, the strip club and his regular bar. But while Vincent believes he helps Oliver become a man, he begins to see something in the grumpy old man that no one else sees: a misunderstood man with a good heart.
