Memories of Matsuko (2006) Netflix South Korea

Memories of Matsuko

When Matsuko is found murdered, her nephew Shō is asked to clear out her cluttered apartment. As he sorts her things and talks with neighbors, a series of flashbacks and testimonies reconstruct the strange, tragic arc of her life. Once a much-loved junior high teacher, Matsuko’s world collapses after she takes the blame for a pupil’s theft and is ostracized by her family and community. Haunted by a childhood in which a sick sister won their father’s favor, she drifts into a succession of abusive romances, sex work, prison time and ties to the criminal underworld, repeatedly convinced each new relationship will finally bring her happiness. Brief consolations — with a kind barber or the student she once defended, now a gangster — end in abandonment, and Matsuko slowly becomes an eccentric recluse. Shō’s investigation reveals a woman driven by an aching need for love, whose life was both heartbreaking and strangely luminous.
