In 1944, postwar Spain. Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) and her mother, Carmen (Ariadna Gil), who is pregnant, move to a small village to which Carmen’s new husband, Vidal (Sergi López), a cruel captain of the Falangist army, has been assigned. Vidal’s mission is to wipe out the last members of the Republican resistance who remain hidden in the mountains of the area. Mercedes (Maribel Verdu), the housekeeper, and the doctor (Alex Angulo) who takes care of Carmen’s delicate state of health, live in the area. One night, Ofelia discovers the ruins of a labyrinth, and there she meets a faun (Doug Jones), a strange creature who makes an amazing revelation to her: she is actually a princess, the last of her lineage, and hers have been waiting for her for her for a long time. To return to her magical kingdom, the girl will have to face three tests.
