Abe Lucas, a brilliant but disillusioned philosophy professor, arrives at a small New England college and drifts through life as an alcoholic, blocked writer and reluctant teacher. He becomes close to two women on campus — Rita Richards, a lonely colleague trapped in an unhappy marriage, and Jill Pollard, a bright young student who finds Abe's troubled charisma hard to resist despite her own relationship. A chance encounter and a startling idea push Abe to take an extreme, existential action that he believes will give his life meaning. That decision jolts him back to life but also sets off consequences that test his relationships and force him to confront what he truly values.
