The Card Counter (2021) Netflix

William Tell (Oscar Isaac) is a solitary ex-military interrogator who now drifts from casino to casino eking out a living as a professional card player. His controlled, ascetic routine is upended when Cirk, a volatile young man bent on avenging a shared enemy from their wartime past, begs Tell for help. With funding from the enigmatic backer La Linda, the pair hit the gambling circuit—eventually setting their sights on the biggest prizes in Las Vegas—while Tell tries to steer Cirk away from a self-destructive course. As they chase wins and a chance at a new life, Tell is forced to confront the moral scars and violent memories he has long suppressed. Directed by Paul Schrader, The Card Counter is a restrained, tense study of guilt, revenge and the possibility of redemption.
