The Avalon is a state-of-the-art starship on a century-plus voyage to the distant colony Homestead II, carrying thousands of passengers in hibernation. When a malfunction in the cryogenic system wakes one passenger, mechanic Jim Preston, he finds himself utterly alone and unable to return to sleep. As months of isolation take a toll, Jim befriends the ship’s android bartender and wrestles with a desperate choice: awaken fellow passenger Aurora Lane to have a companion, knowing she would be robbed of the life she signed up for. His decision — and the lie he tells to hide it — sets up a tense moral and survival struggle as other failures aboard the ship begin to threaten everyone on board.
