Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise), a selfish young man who hopes to inherit the fortune of his late father, learns that the beneficiary is his brother Raymond (Dustin Hoffman), an autistic who he does not know, because he has always lived in a special center. They will both make a long journey through the United States.
