When Kate (Vera Farmiga) and John Coleman (Peter Sarsgaard) lose the baby they were waiting for, everything collapses around them. Their marriage staggers and Kate’s mind is filled with nightmares and fears. To try to get normal again, the couple goes to a local orphanage with the intention of adopting a child. There they are strangely attracted to Esther, a girl with an angelic face (Isabelle Fuhrman). But when the little girl arrives at Coleman’s house, strange things begin to happen, and Kate realizes that Esther hides a terrible secret.
