Shoplifters (2018) Netflix US

Shoplifters

Osamu and Nobuyo live in a cramped Tokyo home with Nobuyo’s sister Aki, their adolescent son Shota, and elderly grandmother Hatsue. To stretch meager incomes and a small pension, Osamu and Shota routinely shoplift everyday necessities, while the household skirts social norms with a pragmatic, if questionable, moral code. One freezing night they find a neglected little girl on the street and bring her into their makeshift family, giving her shelter, a new name and a place in their daily routines. As the child becomes part of the household—sharing in its affections and its petty crimes—an unexpected incident peels back hidden truths about everyone and pulls the family into conflict with the outside world. Quiet, compassionate and unsettling by turns, the film examines poverty, the ties that bind chosen families, and the blurred lines between survival and wrongdoing.
