Carlito Brigante is a Puerto Rican ex-con freshly released after serving part of a long sentence who vows to leave his criminal past behind. He goes into business running a Manhattan nightclub, reunites with his former lover Gail, and begins saving for a fresh start away from New York. But his plan is undermined by old associates and bad luck—his cocaine-addicted lawyer presses him for favors, a nephew and other contacts drag him into violent incidents, and even an old friend tries to pull him back into trouble. As pressure and betrayals mount, Carlito’s dream of escape becomes ever harder to reach.
