The Lion in Winter (1968) Netflix US

The Lion in Winter

Set at Christmas 1183, The Lion in Winter follows the sharp, combustible reunion of England’s King Henry II and his estranged, imprisoned wife Eleanor of Aquitaine when he summons family and rivals to Chinon. Henry, aging and unpredictable, refuses to name a clear heir; his three sons—Richard, Geoffrey and the young John—vie for the crown while pursuing their own secret alliances. Added to the mix are Henry’s mistress Alais (whose fate is tied to a political marriage) and the sly King Philip of France, making the holiday gathering a battlefield of schemes, betrayals and power plays.

Most of the film is an exercise in verbal combat and psychological maneuvering: allegiances shift, old grievances resurface, and each character uses wit, flattery and cruelty to tilt the balance of succession. It’s a tense, darkly witty costume drama that examines family, ambition and the corrosive effects of power.

Adapted from a stage play, the movie leans on dialogue and performances to carry its drama, delivering both biting comedy and tragic undertones as the fate of Henry’s realm is debated and decided.
