After his overprotective mother's death, shy, socially awkward Elling — an aspiring poet in his forties — is sent to a state psychiatric facility, where he meets Kjell Bjarne, a big-hearted but sexually obsessed fellow patient. Two years later, a social program places the pair in a government-funded apartment in Oslo with a small stipend to see if they can manage on their own. Simple routines like answering the phone, buying groceries or eating out prove terrifying at first, but through an unlikely friendship they gain confidence, encounter oddball new acquaintances and discover that independence can be awkward, funny and unexpectedly liberating.
