Deconstructing Harry follows Harry Block, a successful but self-centered novelist whose habit of mining his own life—and the lives of those around him—for fiction has left him isolated and resented. Facing writer’s block just as he’s due to receive an honorary award from his old college, Harry struggles to find anyone willing to accompany him: his latest lover is about to marry his friend, his ex-wives and relatives despise him, and his estranged son is kept away by a bitter former partner. As Harry drives upstate, scenes from his books and memories of his misdeeds blur with reality, forcing him to confront the personal wreckage his work has caused. Equal parts dark comedy and character study, the film examines artistic selfishness, moral consequences, and whether a man who has used others as material can ever change.
