The Cruel Sea (1953) Netflix US

The Cruel Sea

Set during the Battle of the Atlantic in World War II, The Cruel Sea follows Lt. Commander Ericson after he takes command of HMS Compass Rose, a Royal Navy corvette charged with escorting merchant convoys. With a crew and junior officers fresh from training, Ericson must guide them through freezing winter seas and the increasing menace of German U-boats. Much of their work is grim rescue and endurance—plucking survivors from torpedoed ships while often unable to launch an effective counterattack—while the relentless ocean and repeated trauma ashore and at sea forge a deep, hard-won bond between the captain and his first officer. The film emphasizes the harshness of naval service and the mood of wartime at sea.
