The Butterfly Effect (2004) Netflix US

The Butterfly Effect

Evan Treborn has spent much of his childhood and adolescence blanking out during traumatic events, leaving holes in his memory and leaving his friends and family emotionally scarred. Encouraged years earlier to keep journals, he discovers in college that reading those entries transports his present consciousness back into his younger body. Using this uncanny ability to revisit key moments, Evan tries to undo the pain from his past—especially to protect Kayleigh, the girl he still loves—and to repair the ruined lives of his childhood friends.

Each return to the past allows him to change choices and outcomes, but every alteration reshapes the present in unforeseen and often devastating ways. The film follows Evan’s escalating attempts to fix what went wrong and the moral and psychological toll of repeatedly rewriting history, showing that well‑intentioned interference can bring consequences far worse than the original wounds.
