In the summer of 1962, shy new kid Scotty Smalls moves to a new neighborhood and longs to fit in by learning how to play baseball. He’s taken under the wing of Benny Rodriguez, the local star, and becomes part of a rambunctious group of friends who spend long, carefree days at the sandlot—playing ball, staging treehouse sleepovers, chasing first crushes, and squaring off with rival kids. When Scotty borrows his stepfather’s Babe Ruth–signed baseball and accidentally knocks it into the yard of reclusive Mr. Mertle—guarded by the fearsome dog known as “The Beast"—the gang must face their fears and hatch increasingly elaborate plans to get the ball back. The adventure becomes a rite of passage: through teamwork, bravery, and a little luck, the boys forge lifelong bonds and turn an ordinary summer into something unforgettable.
