In the 1950s, a Japanese family moved to the countryside. The two daughters, Satsuki and Mei, became friends with Totoro, a spirit of the forest. The father was a university professor who stimulated the imagination of his daughters by telling them fables and magical stories about goblins, ghosts and protective spirits of homes, while the mother was sick in the hospital.
