Regarding Helen’s investigation, a professor explains the historical basis of legend and the superstitions that surround her: Apparently, Candyman is the vengeful spirit of a slave who was mutilated by a mad mob that accused him of raping a white woman. When Helen decides to repeat Candyman’s name five times, she sets in motion a series of inevitable supernatural events, culminating in horrific massacres in which she herself holds the murder weapon.
